Oblò is a small apartment building located in the centre of Volos, Greece, on a prominent corner plot within a dense yet heterogeneous urban fabric. The surrounding neighbourhood brings together a variety of scales and building typologies, from large apartment blocks to small detached houses, workshops and remnants of the older urban fabric.

The project responds to this diversity through a deliberate fragmentation of its volume. Rather than treating the building as a single monolithic object, the mass is articulated through a series of setbacks and recesses that break down its scale and create moments of relief along the corner of the city block. These transitions allow the building to negotiate between its different neighbours while giving the corner a more porous and dynamic presence.

At the same time, the corner is treated as an opportunity to establish a distinct identity. The building rises towards this prominent point, marking the intersection as a small urban landmark for the neighbourhood. A series of circular openings punctuate the corner, introducing a contrasting geometry to the otherwise orthogonal language of the building. Their form references the oblò — the round window of a ship — creating an architectural gesture that subtly connects the building to the maritime character of Volos.

The project therefore operates between two complementary ideas: adaptation and presence. Its fragmented mass responds to the scale and diversity of the surrounding city, while the articulated corner provides a recognizable point of identity. The building seeks not to imitate its surroundings, but to establish a contemporary presence that belongs to the existing urban fabric while giving something back to it.
